Car registration wrongly transferred to someone else

Summary

Mario's ex-partner asked VicRoads to transfer the registration of Mario's car to her. VicRoads made the transfer. When Mario asked VicRoads to reverse the transfer, they refused. We asked VicRoads to reconsider. They then transferred the registration back to Mario.

What was the case?

VicRoads transferred the registration of Mario's car to his ex-partner Jessica. It did this even though Jessica did not provide any of the necessary documents for a transfer.

When Mario complained to VicRoads, it told him it was 'a civil matter' and to contact the police.

Our enquiries

VicRoads had approved the registration transfer without receiving the necessary documentation.

So, we asked them to:

  • confirm who was in possession of the vehicle
  • return the registration back to Mario if they could confirm he was in possession of the vehicle
  • keep a 'dispute' over the registration in their system until the dispute was resolved.

VicRoads agreed to these steps.

Outcome

VicRoads invited Jessica to show she had the vehicle in her possession by taking it to a VicRoads centre. They told her if she failed to do so, they would reverse the registration.

VicRoads later transferred the registration back to Mario.
